Edgar Watch
In the spirit of the Winter Meetings (and while waiting on Edgar's decision), I offer a trivia tidbit that I stumbled across tonight: Twenty-four years ago this week the Cardinals traded pitchers Rollie Fingers and Pete Vuckovich and catcher Ted Simmons to the Brewers for outfielders Sixto Lezcano and David Green and pitchers Lary Sorenson and Dave LaPoint. Green was supposed to be a star, but finished with a .700 career OPS in 1,398 career ABs. Fingers and Vuckovich each won Cy Young Awards. I feel confident Walt Jocketty will avoid any such pitfalls this offseason.
Vuckovich won his Cy Young in 1982. His 3.34 ERA and 1.03-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio were, at the time, the worst ever. He went 18-6. In the World Series, the Cardinals beat him 6-2 in Game 3, and he got a no-decision in Milwaukee's final loss. In 1982 I was a Royals fan. And very, very young.
