Goose Bumps
Though my thoughts have strayed a few times toward the fact that the Redbirds had only the 13th best record in MLB in 2006, I am fired up! I've watched almost every single game over the past 9 years since moving to STL - and this is what I have waited for. The OPPORTUNITY. I am downtown, it is 6:30 and I am off to Al Hrabosky's to see a championship. If healthy, it stands to reason this team would have won 93-plus games and they just peaked at the right time. Detroit is young - and will be back. But it just is not their time. It is our time. Duncan and Taguchi will man LF and RF. Let's see what happens! I'm leaving my office .... right now.
I'm happy for you but...
I can't get past the fact that an 83-win team beat a wild-card team in the freaking World Series. As I said, after the Redbirds were knocked out by a team that finished 13 games behind them last year, there is probably some karmic justice in the championship. Baseball has just become another sports entity that does a poor job of determining its champion. Really, I think college football's system, while flawed, actually does recognize the best team. The NBA usually does, as well, because of the importance of home court in basketball.
I really can't understand why this doesn't bother more people. They play 162 games, for Pete's sake. The Cardinals had the 13th-best record in a 30 team sport. (Yeah, maybe the could have won more if healthy. But they didn't. And health is a skill.)
Oh well. I'm sure the championship parade will be just as sweet as it would be if the Cardinals won 100 games.
And freely I admit that I'd savor a Royals championship even they were a .500 regular-season team. But the system still pisses me off. In my Strat-O-Matic league, I'm using the 1975 season. I have two eight-team leagues and a 154-games schedule. And I like it.
